Memories of DWCon2006

Having come back from the Con and caught up with my sleep, I thought I'd add my memories of the weekend. The days have rather blurred into each other so I'm not even going to attempt to put it into chronological order, just group by theme.


Cognitive Dissonance or "Someone's gone and broken my brain again"
* Seeing flexor wandering around wearing random_c's auburn wig - fortunately I was spared the sight of Aquarion and the_hatstand in it too, although there are photos posted somewhere
* Discovering someone had brought Wasabi Coated Peas to the Hedgehog Party
* Wandering in to Ops to discover that drachii's hair had turned straight overnight.
* Hearing korenwolf's voice in Toast and Jam, and only realising on the second look that the (utterly clean shaven) Opera Ghost at the next table was the person talking. "... but, but where's the beard gone?...


Unexpected Delights
* Being plied with chocolate by the lovely ssirienna while working the Registration desk.
* Filling in as a last minute substitute in the Movie Music Quiz, getting to pedant Graham Higgins and ending up on the winning team.
* The appearance of songster, isihac, the_warwick, mrs_warwick, da_pol and anejo


Guild Silliness (names withheld to protect the guilty)
* Being treated to a demonstration of the splits and high kicking by one of the Conjurers' "Lovely Assistants" in Ops
* Scamming 27 guild tokens out of one of the ConCom/Staff in one hit, so that they could upgrade to their preferred ribbon colour.
* Watching one of the Priests deputies being given a demonstration of the Ways of the Seamstresses, and leaving clutching a lacy burgundy garter
* Fining one of the UU Guild deputies double for having Unlicensed Cleavage, who paid up promptly, but complained that it was a rather backhanded compliment.
* Admiring the effort that went into the Alchemist produced silent movie "The Seamy Side of Life"


Things that made me cackle
* clanwilliam, Leo Breebaart, Graham Higgins and A.N.Other prancing down the aisle in the Dysk to the tune of "We're off to see the Wizard"
* Free meets George Formby - or rather caerleon playing "All Right Now" on the Ukelele.
* sabremeister's perfectly timed cameo in "The Monster Mash" at Toast and Jam
* jelmer wandering into the showing of "Tales of 1001 Punnes" and exclaiming "Oh shit, it's me with long hair!"
* gmh's photo of sacristan in the infamous red dress
* The look on Leo's face when he discovered at about 2am that pipecleaners have ends sharp enough to burst balloons.


Only at a Discworld Event?
* Getting to hear readings from "Wintersmith" and "Making Money"
* Finester Fred's "Gold Gold Gold" song
* Seeing lots of really impressive costumes
* Staying up til the early hours having conversations veering wildly from music to weddings to politics and all sorts of other topics.
* Being offered a chocolate hobbit in the coffee bar (they're german hobnobs I think)
* Spending dinnertime with 3 women promoting the advantages of Dutchmen, all of whom they had met via Discworld events of one form or another


I had a great time, and am feeling way more relaxed than I was beforehand. Thanks to all the ConCom and staff for their hard work, and all the other people that contributed in one way or another
